Hurdles
  • I was just praying about this last night. One, our founding pastor, who passed away in 2020, was big on preaching the gospel and getting folks saved, but very light on discipleship. He was satisfied if people just kept coming to church. As a result, I inherited a congregation of mature Christians who have forgotten, or never learned, how to disciple someone – especially when that someone is bitter or victimized and suspicious. My people are comfortable with low-touch. They are not equipped for high touch. We HAVE to change that if we are going to win the community that God has assigned to us.
Enablers
  • We are in a low-income, African-American community where many visitors are either unchurched, have suffered a “church hurt”, or have yet to find a church where they feel accepted and valued. They also have a myriad of acute and ongoing needs. We want to give them a good experience, not necessarily so that they join, but so that they begin to have positive feelings about church and Christians, and they develop a sincere and internally motivated desire to be in church and around Christians. We can then build on these feelings to bring them into relationship with Christ.
